PROTECT Minnesota Gun injuries and deaths are preventable
About Us
PROTECT Minnesota is a campaign run by both non-gun owners and gun owners.
Our group recognizes hunting and shooting sports are legitimate activities in Minnesota. We further recognize that many law-abiding individuals keep guns in their homes.
We believe it is time to find common ground and act together to prevent the misuse of firearms. Just as it is not anti-car to promote seat belts, it is not anti-gun to work to prevent gun death and injury.
All rights come with responsibilities. In Minnesota, the right to hunt is constitutionally protected. We share the value that gun ownership comes with the responsibility to keep guns out of the wrong hands.
We work to educate gun owners and the public at large about ways to:
- Prevent unintentional shootings, teen suicides, and firearm theft by using safe storage practices, and
- Make our communities safer by keeping guns out of the hands of those who cannot or will not use them responsibly.
Our Resolution
- Because all Minnesotans adults, children and teenagers -- have the right to be safe at home, at school, and in their communities,
- Because those who own or sell guns have a responsibility to make them inaccessible to those who would not or cannot use them responsibly, and
- Because loopholes in current Minnesota laws have made it too easy for prohibited buyers, including teens, to illegally obtain handguns on the street, through ads in the newspaper or on the Internet, and at gun shows from unlicensed sellers.
We, as organizations and individuals, support:
- EDUCATION ON PREVENTION OF GUN INJURIES AND DEATHS
- Promoting measures that Minnesotans can take to stop gun injuries and deaths, especially among children and teenagers.
- Encouraging Minnesotans, especially households with children, to store firearms safely.
- WORK TO PREVENT ILLEGAL ACCESS TO GUNS
- Requiring background checks for all gun sales and transfers.
- Identifying the sources of crime guns and stopping the illegal trafficking of guns in our communities.
